Choline hydroxide with cas registry number of 123-41-1 is also called (2-Hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium hydroxide ; (beta-Hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium hydroxide ; 2-Hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylethanaminium hydroxide ; Bursine ; EINECS 204-625-1 ; Fagine ; Gossypine ; Luridine ; Trimethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium hydroxide ; UNII-7THJ3EG9SY ; Vidine ; Ethanaminium, 2-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethyl-, hydroxide ; Ethanaminium, 2-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethyl-, hydroxide (1:1) .
Choline hydroxide is a strong base with appearance of colorless viscous liquid. It tastes bitter and extremely hygroscopic. It is not completely stable and it slowly breaks down into trimethylamine. It is thermal stability in acidic solution, but poor in alkaline solution. It is soluble in water, ethanol, insoluble in ether, benzene, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride. The general reagent is 50% solution in water.
