SALT OF CARBONIC ACID & POTASSIUM. COTTONSEED HULL ASHES, SUNFLOWER PLANT ASH, VEGETABLE POTASH & WOOD ASHES ARE ALL IMPURE FORMS OF POTASSIUM CARBONATE. PEARL ASH IS POTASSIUM CARBONATE MADE FROM WOOD ASHES.
Available commercially as a concentrated solution containing ca 47 wt % K2CO3 or in granular crystalline form containing 99.5 wt % K2CO3.
【Exposure Standards and Regulations】
Substance added directly to human food affirmed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
Potassium carbonate used as a general purpose food additive in animal drugs, feeds, and related products is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice.
【Reactivities and Incompatibilities】
Incompatible with KCO; chlorine trifluoride; magnesium.
The mixture of magnesium and potassium carbonate recommended by Castellana as a safe substitute for molten sodium in the Lassaigne test can itself be hazardous, as an equimolar mixture gives an explosive substance (possibly 'carbonylpotassium', potassium benzenehexoxide) on heating.
【Other Preventative Measures】
SAFETY AND HEALTH MEASURES ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE APPLICABLE TO POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE.
EYEWASH FOUNTAINS & SAFETY SHOWERS SHOULD BE PROVIDED IN ANY AREA WHERE EYE OR SKIN CONTACT MAY OCCUR. /POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE/
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
【Protective Equipment and Clothing】
...IRRITATING TO SKIN, MUCOUS MEMBRANE OF EYES & UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT.
【Specification】

Potassium carbonate , its CAS NO. is 584-08-7, the synonyms are Carbonic acid, dipotassium salt ; Dipotassium carbonate .

【Report】

Reported in EPA TSCA Inventory.

【Disposal Methods】
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

Use and Manufacturing

【Use and Manufacturing】
Methods of Manufacturing

Engel-Precht process uses magnesium oxide, potassium chloride, and carbon dioxide, separating the Engels salt (MgCO3.KHCO3.4H2O). Decomp leaves potassium bicarbonate in soln which can be processed to potassium carbonate.
Alkyl amines or ion-exchange resins can be used with potassium chloride and carbon dioxide to yield potassium bicarbonate which is calcined to the carbonate.
Except for small amounts produced by obsolete processes, e.g. the leaching of wood ashes and the Engel-Precht process, potassium carbonate is produced by the carbonation, i.e., via reaction iwth carbon dioxide, of potassium hydroxide.
【Usage】
Ph adjustment, fungicide, microbiocide, herbicide.

Biomedical Effects and Toxicity

【Therapeutic Uses】
MEDICATION (VET): EXPTL IN SHEEP FEEDS TO REDUCE INCIDENCE OF URINARY CALCULI.
ALKALIZER; DIURETIC AGENT
MEDICATION (VET): DEGREASING AGENT, KERATIN SOFTENER
【Biomedical Effects and Toxicity】
ORAL DOSES ARE CAPABLE OF ELEVATING SERUM POTASSIUM (EXPTL 30 G DOSES TO SHEEP...ELEVATED SERUM POTASSIUM, WITHIN 15 MIN).
