Formulations/Preparations Solvay soda. Technical grade (about 99% pure) is known as soda ash. /Anhyd/ ... Nevite, soda. Technical product is known as sal soda or washing soda. /Sodium carbonate decahydrate/
Sodium carbonate is sold as a material containing at least 58.0% sodium oxide (theoretical, 58.48%)
Grades: Dense 58%; light 58%; extra light; natural; refined. /Soda ash/
Grades; USP; technical; Food chemicals Codex. /Sodium carbonate monohydrate/
Differences in the bulk density are the major distinction between various grades.
Exposure Standards and Regulations Substance added directly to human food affirmed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
Sodium carbonate used as a general purpose food additive in animal drugs, feeds, and related products is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice.
Reactivities and Incompatibilities The anhydrous reaction of sodium carbonate & phosphorus pentoxide, initiated by local heating, can generate relatively high temp.
DECOMP BY ACIDS WITH EFFERVESCENCE; COMBINES WITH WATER WITH EVOLUTION OF HEAT
When sodium carbonate was applied to red hot aluminum, an explosion occurred.
Stratified concentrated sulfuric acid in a reaction tank was suddenly contacted by alkali wash. The violent ensuing reaction caused a geyser of material, propelled by carbon dioxide and steam, to shoot from the manhole of the tank.
Can react violently with ... F2, Li, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.
Amixture of ammonia and sodium carbonate in gum arabic solution (marking ink) exploded when warmed.
Sodium carbonate ignite and burn fiercely in contact with fluoride.
Other Preventative Measures Health engineering measures are mechanization & hermetic enclosure of the processes, as well as efficient exhaust ventilation. Wash basins & showers must be provided near the workplaces. ... Skin care after work should be encouraged.
IT IS COMMON PRACTICE TO PROVIDE EXHAUST VENTILATION FOR /HEAT-TREATING/ CYANIDE BATHS. THIS IS NOT BECAUSE OF PRODUCTION OF CYANIDE FUME. FUME CONSISTS ESSENTIALLY OF SODIUM CARBONATE, WHICH IS SOMEWHAT IRRITANT.
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants.
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
Protective Equipment and Clothing DUSTS OR VAPORS OF SODIUM CARBONATE MAY CAUSE IRRITATION OF MUCOUS MEMBRANES WITH SUBSEQUENT COUGHING AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH.
A skin and eye irritant.
Specification

? Sodium carbonate , with CAS number of 497-19-8, can be called Bisodium carbonate ; Carbonic acid disodium salt ; Carbonic acid, disodium salt ; carbonic acid, sodium salt (1:2) ; Disodium carbonate ; Natrium Carbonicum Calcinatum ; Natrium Carbonicum Siccatum .?Sodium carbonate (CAS NO.497-19-8) is a sodium salt of carbonic acid. It most commonly occurs as a crystalline heptahydrate and is domestically well known for its everyday use as a water softener.? Sodium carbonate (CAS NO.497-19-8) is used in the manufacture of glass, glass is produced, when combined with sand (SiO2) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and heated to very high temperatures, then cooled very rapidly. It is also used as a relatively strong base in various settings. In chemistry, it is often used as an electrolyte. In domestic use, it is used as a water softener during laundry.

Disposal Methods SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
