3. Use and Manufacturing
3.1 Agricultural Uses
With excess ammonia, the technical grade of diammonium phosphate (DAP) contains 16 to 18% nitrogen and 20to 21 % phosphorus. DAP is an important fertilizer as well as an intermediate in the production of complex fertilizers and bulk blends.
3.2 Definition
ChEBI: An inorganic phosphate, being the diammonium salt of phosphoric acid.
3.3 Potential Exposure
Used in fireproofing of textiles; woodand paper; in soldering flux; as a fertilizer; a buffer; inbaking powder and food additives.
3.4 Shipping
There are no DOT/UN listed requirements.
3.5 Usage
(1) Diammonium phosphate is industrially used as feed additives, flame retardants and the ingredients of the fire extinguishing agent.(2) It can be used as analysis reagents and buffer(3) It is a widely applicable efficient fertilizer for vegetables, fruits, rice and wheat.(4) It can be used as water softeners; yeast foodstuffs, and so on.(5) In the food industry, it can be used as food leavening agent, dough regulator, yeast food, brewing fermentation additives as well as being used as a buffer.(6) It can be used as ruminant feed additives.(7) It can be used for printing plate, medicine, fire prevention, electronic tubes.(8) Fertilizer level is mainly used for high concentrations nitrogen and phosphorus compound fertilizer. The industrial grade can be used for impregnation of wood and fabric to increase its durability; it can be used as dry powder fire extinguishing agent, fluorescent phosphor; also used for the manufacturing of printing plate, tube, ceramic and china, wastewater biochemical treatment; military use it as the flame retardants of rocket engine motor insulation materials.

4.1 Exposure Standards and Regulations
The food additive diammonium phosphate may be safely used in ruminant feed in accordance with the following prescribed conditions: (a) The food additive is the product resulting from the neutralization of feeding-phosphoric-acid or defluorinated wet-process phosphoric acid with anhydrous ammonia ... contains not less than 106.25% equivalent crude protein (nitrogen X 6.25) and 20% phosphorus contains not more than 1 part fluorine to 100 parts phosphorus, 75 ppm arsenic (as As), 30 ppm heavy metals, as lead (Pb); (b) It is used in ruminant feeds as a source of phosphorus and nitrogen in an amt that supplies not more than 2% of equivalent crude protein in the total daily ration.
Ammonium phosphate (mono-, and dibasic) used as a general purpose food additive in animal drugs, feeds, and related products is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice. /Ammonium phosphate (mono-, and dibasic)
Substance added directly to human food affirmed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
4.2 Other Preventative Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
4.3 Cleanup Methods
Stop discharge if possible. Keep people away. Avoid contact with solid and dust. Isolate and remove discharged material. Notify health and pollution control agencies.
4.4 DisposalMethods

SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

4.5 RIDADR
UN 3465 6.1 / PGIII
4.5 FirePotential

4.6 Safety Profile
Low to moderatetoxicity. See also PHOSPHATES. Whenheated to decomposition it emits very toxicfumes of POx, NOx, and NH3.
4.7 Formulations/Preparations
Grades: technical; CP /chemically pure: a grade designation signifying a minimum of impurities, but not 100% purity/; fertilizer; feed; dentifrice; highly purified, for phosphors; FCC /Food Chemicals Codex/.
The grade used medicinally is 98-99% pure.
