3. Use and Manufacturing
3.1 Purification Methods
Recrystallise the chloride several times from water [Ferragina et al. J Chem Soc, Dalton Trans 265 1986]. Recrystallisation from 8M HCl gives the octahydrate as white needles on concentrating. It is also formed by hydrolysing ZrCl4 with water. After one recrystallisation from H2O, 99+% grade zirconyl chloride had Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cu, Hf, Mg, Na, Sc and V at 20, 1.8, 0.6, 0.6, 0.4, 8.4, 0.4, 2.4, 80 and 3 ppm, respectively. (See above.) SRP: Contaminated protective clothing should be segregated in such a manner so that there is no direct personal contact by personnel who handle, dispose, or clean the clothing. Quality assurance to ascertain the completeness of the cleaning procedures should be implemented before the decontaminated protective clothing is returned for reuse by the workers. Contaminated clothing should not be taken home at end of shift, but should remain at employee's place of work for cleaning.
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants.

4.2 Cleanup Methods
1. Ventilate area of spill. 2. Collect spilled material in the most convenient and safe manner and deposit in sealed containers for reclamation... . /Zirconium compound (as Zr)/
4.3 DisposalMethods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Disposal is usually carried out by neutralization with lime under controlled conditions at a licensed waste material processor.

4.5 Protective Equipment and Clothing
Clothing contaminated with zirconium oxychloride, zirconyl acetate, or zirconium tetrachloride should be placed in closed containers for storage until it can be discarded or until provision is made for the removal of containment from the clothing. If the clothing is to be laundered or otherwise cleaned to remove the contaminant, the person performing the operation should be informed of contaminant's hazardous properties.
Non-impervious clothing which becomes contaminated with zirconium oxide, zirconium oxychloride, zirconyl acetate or zirconium tetrachloride should be removed promptly and not reworn until the contaminant is removed from the clothing.
Employees should be provided with and required to use impervious clothing, gloves, face shields (eight-in minimum), and other appropriate protective clothing necessary to prevent repeated or prolonged skin contact with zirconium oxide, zirconium oxychloride, zirconyl acetate, or liquids containing these compounds, and to prevent skin contact with zirconium tetrachloride or liquids containing zirconium tetrachloride, where skin contact may occur. /Zirconium compounds/

6.3 Usage
Zirconium dichloride oxide is utilized as a precursor to prepare other zirconium compounds. It is employed in acid dyes, pigment toners and antiperspirants. It finds application as a rubber additive and a fiber treatment agent. It is also used in paint drying, refractories, ceramics and glaze.
6.4 General Description
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Greener Chemistry. This product is used as a potential green catalyst. Click here for more information.
6.5 Synthesis
Zircon is melted with caustic soda, rinsed, desiliconized, and then reacted with sulfuric acid, and then ammonia water is added to obtain zirconium hydroxide precipitate. Finished zirconium oxychloride.
