By fusing sodium beta-naphthalene sulfonate with caustic soda. Product is distilled in vacuo and then sublimed.
Alkylation and isomerization (240 deg C) carried out with phosphoric acid catalyst. Oxidation at 90-110 deg C forms the hydrperoxide, which is cleaved with dilute sulfuric acid to form 2-naphthol.

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 0.45(SRC), determined from an experimental log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(3), indicates that 2-naphthol will have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of 2-naphthol will not be important from moist soil surfaces(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.6X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(4,SRC), nor from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based on an extrapolated vapor pressure of 3.2X10-4 mm Hg(5,SRC). Biodegradation studies done in a chernozem soil suggest that 2-naphthol will not biodegrade in soil(6-8) although other screening tests have indicated that 2-naphthol is biodegradable(9-11).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 0.45(SRC), determined from an experimental log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(3), indicates that 2-naphthol may not adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC) in the water. 2-Naphthol is not expected to volatilize from water surfaces based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.6X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). An estimated BCF value of 0.26(3,SRC), from an experimental log Kow(2), suggests that 2-naphthol will not bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms(SRC) according to a recommended classification scheme(5). Biodegradation studies in sludge and in seawater, suggest that 2-naphthol will easily biodegrade in water(6-11). Oxidation reactions in water may be an important fate process(12).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a suggested classification scheme(1), an extrapolated vapor pressure of 3.2X10-4 mm Hg at 25 deg C(2,SRC) indicates that 2-naphthol will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase 2- naphthol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 2 hours(3,SRC). Reaction with nitrate radicals may also be important(3,SRC). Particulate-phase 2-naphthol may be physically removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC).
