Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is a colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid with low volatility and no sharp odor. It is an aromatic ester, specifically a dialkyl phthalate, synthesized from phthalic anhydride and branched C9 alcohols. DINP is primarily used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other polymers to impart flexibility, durability, and processability. Its principal applications are in wire and cable insulation, flooring, automotive interior parts, and synthetic leather—typically where enhanced thermal stability and migration resistance are required. It is not used as a chemical intermediate but functions exclusively as an additive in polymer formulations.
