Alkyd Resin Market share- How big is the Alkyd Resin market?

China, Germany, and the United States are the leading exporters of Alkyd Resin (CAS 63148-69-6), collectively accounting for over 50% of global export value in 2023–2024, while India, Vietnam, and Mexico have emerged as top importers, driven by growth in domestic coatings and construction sectors. Import volumes to Southeast Asia and Latin America rose steadily from 2022 to 2024, coinciding with moderate upward pressure on Alkyd Resin prices amid tightening supply chains and raw material cost volatility.

Alkyd Resin Market Analysis

Alkyd Resin Recent Market Dynamics Intelligence, Analysis & Forecast

I. Market Dynamics Intelligence

1. Price Trends
- Current Prices: In March 2026, the average price of mainstream medium-oil general-purpose alkyd resins stabilized at RMB 8,000 per ton. In the East China region, short-oil alkyd resin quotations ranged from RMB 12,800 to 14,500 per ton; high-solids modified products commanded a premium of 25–30%.
- Historical Prices: The market average price was approximately RMB 11,648 per ton in 2024 and RMB 11,240 per ton in 2022, indicating an upward-trending price volatility over recent years.

2. Supply-Demand Balance
- Capacity & Output: In 2025, China’s national effective capacity stood at 1.85 million tons/year, with actual output reaching 1.685 million tons—yielding a capacity utilization rate of 91.1%, signaling a tightening supply-demand balance. From January to February 2026, environmental inspections in East China led to the suspension of operations at 17 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reducing annual capacity by 23,000 tons; leading enterprises compensated for this shortfall via technological upgrades.
- Import/Export Status: In 2025, export volume reached 19,500 tons, representing a 44.55% year-on-year increase; exports from January to February 2026 totaled 3,500 tons, up 42.39% YoY—export growth significantly outpacing import growth.

3. Market Size
- Overall Market: China’s alkyd resin market size is projected to reach RMB 14.81 billion in 2026, growing 3.7% YoY, continuing a structural optimization phase within a plateaued growth trajectory.
- Segmented Markets: The water-based alkyd resin market is expected to reach RMB 4.69 billion (up 8.6% YoY); the water-based alkyd resin emulsion segment is forecast to reach RMB 4.72 billion (up 10.3% YoY).

4. Policy Drivers
- Environmental Regulations: The Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s “Comprehensive VOC Control Program for Key Industries (2025 Revised Edition)” mandates 100% water-based formulation for newly built wood coating production lines starting in 2026; subsidy standards for retrofitting existing production lines have increased by 30%, directly boosting demand for water-based alkyd resins.
- Industrial Policies: The National Development and Reform Commission’s “14th Five-Year Plan Implementation Scheme for New Energy Storage Industry Development” includes water-based coatings in its recommended green manufacturing process directory for new-energy equipment—including wind turbine towers and photovoltaic support structures—generating an estimated incremental market of RMB 280 million in 2025.

5. Technological Advancement
- High-Performance Modified Products: Jiangsu Sanmu Group’s SM-8260 series achieves VOC content ≤80 g/L and surface-drying time ≤25 minutes; Zhejiang Transfar TianSong and SOPHIA Home jointly developed a water-based alkyd–polyurethane hybrid resin successfully applied to edge-band coating for custom furniture.
- Bio-Based Routes: Shandong Yuanli Technology’s pilot-scale (1,000-ton/year) bio-based polyol production line demonstrates a 12.6% cost advantage over petroleum-based routes and has entered the evaluation lists of global leaders including AkzoNobel and PPG.

6. Application Expansion
- New Energy Vehicles: Demand for insulating coatings drives annual incremental demand for modified alkyd resins exceeding 160,000 tons.
- Sustainable Packaging: Penetration of bio-based alkyd resins in food-grade packaging films continues to rise.
- Emerging Markets: India’s construction sector (CAGR 12.6% during 2024–2030) and automotive industry (ranked fourth globally in 2022 production volume) are unlocking substantial demand for alkyd resin-based paints.

II. Analysis & Judgment

1. Short-Term (2026)
- Tightening Supply-Demand: Environmental enforcement-induced SME shutdowns and partial capacity substitution via upgrades by leading firms result in a structurally tighter supply-demand balance—prices likely to remain stable or rise modestly.
- Environmental Policy Catalyst: Regulatory mandates accelerate water-based conversion, making water-based alkyd resins the primary growth driver.
- Accelerated Technology Iteration: High-performance modified products and bio-based solutions emerge as key competitive battlegrounds; technologically advanced enterprises will secure market leadership.

2. Medium-to-Long Term (2027–2030)
- Market Expansion: Continued downstream application diversification and rising demand from emerging markets will sustain overall market growth.
- Structural Optimization: Penetration rates of water-based and high-solids products will accelerate, positioning eco-friendly alkyd resins as the dominant product category.
- Technology Substitution Risk: Innovations such as bio-based polyols may displace conventional feedstocks; enterprises must proactively monitor and prepare for potential technology displacement.

III. Forecast

1. Market Size & Structure
- Water-Based & High-Solids Products: By 2026, eco-friendly alkyd resins are projected to achieve >35% penetration in the wood coatings segment and reach 28.6% adoption in light industrial/appliance pre-coated coil coating applications.
- Modified Technologies: Penetration of acrylic-modified and nano-composite technologies will increase from 15% in 2023 to over 25% by 2026.

2. Technology Trends
- Bio-Based Polyols: Commercialization progress exceeds expectations; Shandong Yuanli’s cost advantage may catalyze industry-wide raw material structure transformation.
- Specialty Functional Alkyd Resins: Growing demand for self-healing, UV-resistant, and other specialty functional alkyd resins—e.g., Sanmu Group’s self-healing alkyd resin has demonstrated scratch-recovery functionality on Huawei data center server enclosures.

3. Investment Strategy
- Focus on Differentiated Technologies: Prioritize breakthroughs in high-solids, water-based, and bio-based technologies to build green-premium capabilities.
- Target Emerging Application Sectors: Pursue M&A and integration strategies to expand market share in high-growth sectors such as new energy vehicles and intelligent packaging.
- Establish Diversified Raw Material Procurement Systems: Employ futures instruments to hedge against price volatility and ensure stable raw material supply.

About Alkyd Resin

Alkyd resin (CAS 63148-69-6) is a viscous, amber-to-brown liquid or semi-solid material at room temperature, typically odorless or with a mild ester-like odor; it exhibits low volatility and no well-defined melting or boiling point due to its polymeric nature. It is a synthetic polyester resin, chemically classified as an oil-modified polyester, formed via polycondensation of polyols, polybasic acids (often phthalic anhydride), and fatty acids or oils. Alkyd resins serve primarily as film-forming binders in surface coatings and are not used as chemical intermediates in synthesis. Their principal applications are in architectural and industrial paints, varnishes, enamels, and primers—especially where cost-effective, durable, and air-drying protective or decorative finishes are required.

Alkyd resins are used as vehicles in exterior house paints, marine paints, and baking enamels. Molded alkyd resins are used for electrical components, distributor caps, encapsulation, and a variety of similar applications.

This chemical is included in Plastics. See more about what is Alkyd Resin and Alkyd Resin SDS information.
