포타슘 포메이트는 흰색 결정성 흡습성 고체로, 특별한 냄새가 없고 물에 매우 잘 녹으며, 끓기 전에 분해되며 융점은 약 253 °C이다. 이 화합물은 단쇄 유기산(포름산)의 알칼리 금속 염으로 분류되며, 주로 무기–유기 하이브리드 화합물로서 다용도 기능을 한다. 산업적으로는 낮은 독성과 부식 억제 특성 덕분에 공항 및 민감한 인프라를 위한 제빙제로 사용되며, 석유 시추 유체 내에서 버퍼링 제제 및 촉매로도 활용된다. 또한 저온 시스템에서 열전달 매체로 사용되며, 포름산, 포타슘 옥살레이트 및 특수 촉매 합성의 전구체로도 쓰인다. 일반적인 적용 분야로는 석유·가스 채굴, 겨울철 도로 관리, 화학 제조업—특히 염소계 비료를 사용하지 않고 생분해성이 뛰어난 대체제가 요구되는 공정—이 있다.

Drilling fluid system which formulated with potassium formate has outstanding advantages of strong inhibition, good compatibility, environmental protection, reservoir protection. Field application results shows that potassium formate can inhibite clay water divide.
