Styrol ist eine farblose bis leicht gelbe, ölige Flüssigkeit mit einem stechend süßlichen, blumigen Geruch und hoher Flüchtigkeit; es hat einen Siedepunkt von 145 °C und einen Schmelzpunkt von −30 °C. Es ist ein aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoff und ein Vinyl-substituiertes Benzol und wird als wichtiger organischer chemischer Zwischenstoff klassifiziert. Styrol wird überwiegend polymerisiert, um Polystyrolharze und Copolymere herzustellen – darunter Acrylnitril-Butadien-Styrol (ABS), Styrol-Acrylnitril (SAN) und Styrol-Butadien-Kautschuk (SBR) –, die in großem Umfang in Verpackungen, Automobilteilen, Baumaterialien und Konsumgütern eingesetzt werden. Es dient zudem als reaktives Verdünnungsmittel in ungesättigten Polyesterharzen für glasfaserverstärkte Kunststoffe, die in maritimen, Transport- und Industrieanwendungen verwendet werden.

SBS and SIS thermoplastic elastomers are made with butadiene and isoprene copolymerization, and as a crosslinking monomer, styrene is used in the modification of PVC, polypropylene, and unsaturated polyester.Syrene is used as a hard monomer for the production of styrene acrylic emulsion and solvent pressure sensitive adhesive. Emulsion adhesive and paint can be prepared by copolymerization with vinyl acetate and acrylic ester. Styrene is one of the most commonly used vinyl monomers in the scientific field, used in various modified and composite materials.[6]In addition, a small amount of styrene is also used as perfume and other intermediates.
