Liquefied Natural Gas Market Analysis

Recent Market Dynamics Intelligence for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

I. Price Trends
1. Domestic Market:
- Recent domestic LNG prices have shown a trend of rising with fluctuations. The average ex-works price in major production areas has increased by approximately 3%-5% compared to the previous week, while prices at some receiving terminals have risen by 8%-10%.
- Regional differentiation is evident. Prices in northern regions have risen more sharply due to the early release of heating demand, whereas prices in the East and South China regions have remained stable with a slight upward trend, supported by import costs.

2. International Market:
- European TTF natural gas futures prices have continued to rise due to expectations of supply tightness, with a weekly increase of over 12%, driving Asian LNG spot prices higher. The JKM (Japan-Korea benchmark) index has broken through USD 15 per million British thermal units (MMBtu).
- US Henry Hub prices have slightly declined due to increased inventories, but the risk of supply interruptions caused by export facility malfunctions has provided support for the price floor.

II. Supply and Demand Dynamics
1. Supply Side:
- Domestic: Some northern gas fields have entered maintenance periods for winter supply guarantee, leading to a month-on-month production decline of approximately 5%. Import volumes at receiving terminals remain high, but vessel arrival schedules have been delayed due to weather factors, resulting in tight short-term supply.
- International: Facilities in major exporting countries such as Australia and Qatar are operating stably, but intensified competition for European demand has increased procurement costs for Asian buyers.

2. Demand Side:
- Domestic: Heating demand in northern cities has started earlier than usual, and industrial gas usage has partially recovered due to the resumption of production after environmental restrictions, resulting in an overall month-on-month demand increase of 8%-10%.
- International: Natural gas power generation demand in Europe has surged due to insufficient renewable energy generation. In Asian emerging markets (such as India and Southeast Asia), import volumes have increased by 15% year-on-year due to economic activity recovery.

III. Costs and Profits
1. Import Costs:
- Long-term contract (LNG) prices, linked to crude oil prices with a lag effect, have seen temporary relief in cost pressure. However, spot procurement costs have risen due to higher international prices, compressing import profits to a range of 50-80 yuan per ton.
2. Domestic Production:
- Coal-to-LNG costs have decreased slightly due to falling coal prices, but gas-based LNG costs remain strongly supported by increased raw gas prices.

IV. Policy and Macro Environment
1. Domestic Policy:
- Winter supply guarantee policies require gas storage facilities to be filled in advance. Inventory levels at some receiving terminals are below the same period last year, and the need for replenishment supports prices.
- Environmental policies promoting the shift from coal to gas are driving long-term demand expectations upward.
2. International Macro:
- The ongoing European energy crisis has intensified global supply tightness expectations, as natural gas storage rates are below the five-year average.
- A stronger US dollar exerts pressure on LNG prices denominated in USD, but geopolitical risks (such as the Middle East situation) have increased safe-haven demand.

V. Analysis and Judgment
1. Short-term (1-2 weeks):
- Domestic prices are expected to remain at high levels with narrowed fluctuations (2%-3% increase), supported by heating demand and import costs.
- International prices are expected to remain firm due to European demand competition and supply interruption risks, but caution is needed regarding potential downward pressure from the resumption of US exports.
2. Medium-term (1-3 months):
- Domestic prices may see a pullback due to pre-Spring Festival industrial shutdowns and rising temperatures, although supply guarantee policies will limit the magnitude of the decline.
- International prices will be influenced by the progress of European inventory replenishment. If replenishment lags, prices may break through USD 16 per MMBtu.

VI. Forecasts
1. Price Ranges:
- Domestic major production area ex-works price: 4,800-5,200 yuan/ton; Receiving terminal wholesale price: 5,500-6,000 yuan/ton.
- International JKM index: USD 14-17/MMBtu; TTF futures: EUR 45-55/MWh.
2. Key Risk Factors:
- Progress of European natural gas storage, timing of the restart of the US Freeport LNG export facility, and the duration of domestic cold wave weather.
