Dimethyl ether Market share- How big is the Dimethyl ether market?

China and the United States are the leading exporters of dimethyl ether, together accounting for a majority of global shipments, while India, South Korea, and Germany represent the largest importers. Dimethyl ether prices have remained relatively stable amid steady demand from industrial fuel and aerosol propellant applications. Exports from China have expanded modestly over the past three years, while Indian imports have risen consistently, reflecting growing domestic use in clean cooking fuel programs.

Dimethyl ether Market Analysis

DME (Dimethyl Ether) Recent Commodity Market Intelligence Report

I. Price Dynamics

* National Benchmark Price: As of July 7, 2026, the Echemnet (Shengyishe) DME benchmark price stood at RMB 4,450.00 per metric ton, representing a 1.84% decline from the beginning-of-month level of RMB 4,533.33 per metric ton.
* Regional Prices:
+ Southwest Region: Spot quotation on July 6 was RMB 4,450 per metric ton—unchanged over the past week; up by RMB 50 per metric ton (a 1.14% increase) over the past month.
+ Other Regions: According to publicly available information, regional prices vary but generally fluctuate within the range of RMB 4,400–4,500 per metric ton.

II. Market Supply and Demand

* Supply Situation:
+ Methanol is the primary raw material for DME production; its supply stability, pricing, and quality directly impact DME production costs and scale.
+ In recent years, expanding methanol production and consumption markets have ensured relatively stable raw material supply for DME; however, overcapacity remains an ongoing issue in the DME industry.
* Demand Situation:
+ As a clean fuel, DME enjoys broad application in civil fuel (e.g., household cooking/heating) and automotive fuel sectors.
+ With intensified environmental policies and growing demand for clean energy, DME market demand is expected to maintain an upward trend.
+ Nonetheless, demand remains volatile and is significantly influenced by competing alternative energy sources as well as macroeconomic conditions.

III. Competitive Landscape

* Market Concentration: The Chinese DME industry exhibits low market concentration—the top ten producers collectively account for less than 40% of total industry capacity.
* Key Enterprises: Hebei Kayue Chemical, Henan Xinlianxin Chemical, and Hebei Jichun Chemical are among the industry leaders; however, their individual market shares remain relatively modest.
* Competitive Dynamics: Intense price competition persists, compressing enterprise profit margins. Additionally, structural challenges—including overcapacity and inconsistent product quality—continue to plague the sector.

IV. Policy Environment

* Environmental Policies: Increasing national emphasis on environmental protection has led to stricter regulatory frameworks restricting conventional fossil fuel usage while actively promoting clean and renewable energy development. As a clean-burning fuel, DME benefits from favorable policy support due to its environmental advantages.
* Energy Policies: Global energy structural transformation and domestic clean-energy policy promotion further bolster DME’s prospects as an alternative fuel, supporting sustained growth in its market demand.

Analysis & Assessment

* Price Trend: DME prices have recently exhibited mild downward pressure, primarily attributable to demand volatility and persistent overcapacity. Nevertheless, long-term price stability and gradual appreciation are anticipated, driven by advancing environmental regulations and rising clean-energy demand.
* Supply-Demand Balance: Current supply-demand conditions are relatively balanced overall, although overcapacity remains unresolved. Looking ahead, demand growth coupled with gradual rationalization and exit of inefficient capacity should progressively improve market equilibrium.
* Competitive Structure: Competition remains fierce amid low concentration; however, accelerated industry consolidation and breakthroughs in core technologies may enable competitively advantaged firms to capture greater market share.

Outlook

* Price Forecast: In the near term, DME prices are expected to continue oscillating within the RMB 4,400–4,500 per metric ton range. Over the longer term, steady demand expansion and progressive overcapacity reduction should support a stable upward price trajectory.
* Market Outlook: With continued advancement of environmental policies and clean-energy demand, DME holds promising applications across civil fuel, automotive fuel, and other emerging sectors. Moreover, technological progress and cost reductions will further broaden its utilization as a chemical feedstock.
* Competitive Outlook: Market rivalry will intensify, yet industry concentration is projected to rise gradually. Firms possessing proprietary technology, operational efficiency, and strong market positioning are poised to emerge as dominant players.

About Dimethyl ether

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a colorless, highly volatile gas at ambient temperature with a mild, ethereal odor; it is typically handled as a liquefied gas under moderate pressure and has a boiling point of −24.8 °C and a melting point of −141.5 °C. It is classified as an aliphatic ether and a simple oxygenated hydrocarbon. DME serves primarily as an aerosol propellant, a clean-burning alternative fuel for diesel engines and cooking applications, and a chemical intermediate in the production of dimethyl sulfate and methyl halides. It is also used as a solvent and extraction medium in pharmaceutical and polymer processing, and as a feedstock in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) processes for light olefin synthesis.

Dimethyl ether is used as a solvent in aerosol formulations.
Dimethyl ether is a liquefied gas and exists as a liquid at room temperature when contained under its own vapor pressure, or as a gas when exposed to room temperature and pressure.It is a clear, colorless, virtually odorless liquid. In high concentrations, the gas has a faint ether-like odor.

This chemical is included in Energy. See more about what is Dimethyl ether and Dimethyl ether SDS information.
