Anthracite is a dense, hard, lustrous black solid with a high carbon content and low volatile matter; it is non-volatile, odorless, and does not melt or boil under standard industrial conditions. It is classified as a naturally occurring, high-rank coal rather than a discrete organic chemical compound, and is not typically used as a molecular intermediate in synthesis. Industrially, anthracite serves primarily as a premium-grade fuel in metallurgical processes—especially sintering and blast furnace injection—and as a filtration medium in water and wastewater treatment due to its physical hardness and low impurity leaching. Its applications are concentrated in energy generation, metal production, and environmental engineering, with no significant role in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, polymers, or coatings.
