Carbonato de sodio (CAS 497-19-8) es un sólido cristalino anhidro blanco o una fina pulverulencia, inodoro y no volátil, con un punto de fusión elevado de aproximadamente 851 °C. Es una sal inorgánica —específicamente, la sal sódica del ácido carbónico— y existe comúnmente en formas hidratadas (por ejemplo, decahidrato, heptahidrato), así como en su presentación anhidra. Actúa como un intermedio clave en la producción de vidrio, donde funciona como fundente para reducir la temperatura de fusión de la sílice, y se emplea ampliamente en el tratamiento de aguas, la formulación de detergentes y la fabricación de pasta y papel. Sus aplicaciones típicas incluyen la fabricación de vidrio, detergentes y agentes de limpieza, síntesis química (por ejemplo, silicato sódico, bicarbonato sódico) y procesamiento metalúrgico.

It is also used in the production of synthetic detergent additive sodium tripolyphosphate and other sodium salt. It can be used as a buffer, neutralizing agent and dough conditioner.
