Le carbonate de sodium (n° CAS 497-19-8) est un solide cristallin incolore anhydre ou une poudre fine, inodore et non volatile, avec un point de fusion élevé d’environ 851 °C. C’est un sel inorganique — plus précisément, le sel de sodium de l’acide carbonique — qui existe couramment sous des formes hydratées (par exemple, décahydraté, heptahydraté) ainsi que sous forme anhydre. Il constitue un intermédiaire essentiel dans la production du verre, où il agit comme fondant afin d’abaisser la température de fusion de la silice, et est largement utilisé dans le traitement des eaux, la formulation de détergents et la fabrication de pâte à papier et de papier. Ses domaines d’application typiques comprennent la fabrication du verre, les détergents et agents nettoyants, la synthèse chimique (par exemple, silicate de sodium, bicarbonate de sodium) ainsi que le traitement métallurgique.

It is also used in the production of synthetic detergent additive sodium tripolyphosphate and other sodium salt. It can be used as a buffer, neutralizing agent and dough conditioner.
