산화칼슘은 실온에서 흰색, 부식성, 결정성 고체로 일반적으로 미세한 분말 또는 덩어리 형태로 존재한다. 휘발성이 없고 무취이며, 약 2,572 °C의 높은 융점을 갖는다. 산화칼슘은 무기 금속 산화물이자 강력한 염기로, 흔히 ‘소석회’라고 불린다. 산화칼슘은 수산화칼슘(숙성 석회), 탄산칼슘 및 다양한 칼슘 염의 제조 과정에서 핵심 중간체로 사용된다. 주요 산업적 용도로는 제강 공정(용융제로 사용), 연돌 가스 탈황, 수질 및 폐수 처리, 시멘트 및 모르타르 제조 원료 등이 있다. 또한 유리, 종이, 일부 농약 제형의 제조에도 사용된다.
