Calcium oxide is a white, caustic, crystalline solid at room temperature, typically encountered as a fine powder or lumps; it is non-volatile, odorless, and has a high melting point of approximately 2,572 °C. It is an inorganic metal oxide and a strong base, commonly known as quicklime. Calcium oxide serves as a key intermediate in the production of calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), calcium carbonate, and various calcium salts. Its primary industrial applications include steelmaking (as a flux), flue gas desulfurization, water and wastewater treatment, and as a raw material in cement and mortar manufacturing. It is also used in the production of glass, paper, and certain agrochemical formulations.

It appears as white cubic crystalline powder. Industrial products often contain magnesia, alumina and ferric oxide and other impurities so exhibit dark gray, light yellow or brown. It is soluble in acid.
