o-자일렌은 맑고 무색의 휘발성 액체로, 특유의 방향족 냄새가 난다. 이는 방향족 탄화수소이며, 3가지 이성질체인 디메틸벤젠 중 하나로, 녹는점은 −25 °C이고 끓는점은 144 °C이다. 주로 화학 중간체로 사용되며, 촉매 산화를 통한 프탈산 무수물 생산에 핵심 원료로 활용된다. 이 유도체는 오르토프탈레이트 가소제, 불포화 폴리에스터 수지 및 알키드 수지 제조에 필수적이다. 주요 응용 분야는 플라스틱, 코팅제, 접착제 및 건축 자재이다.
