1-ميثيل-2-بيروليدينون هو مركب عضوي هتروسيكلي غير متطاير نسبيًّا، ويظهر على هيئة سائل عديم اللون إلى أصفر فاتح برائحة خفيفة تشبه رائحة الأثير، وله نقطة غليان مرتفعة تبلغ حوالي 204 درجة مئوية ونقطة انصهار تقارب -24 درجة مئوية. يُصنَّف كأمونيد حلقي مشتق من البيروليدون، ويتميَّز بقدرته الممتازة على إذابة مجموعة واسعة من البوليمرات والمركبات العضوية وغير العضوية. يُستخدم بشكل رئيسي كمذيب قوي وفعال في صناعات الطلاء والطلاء الإلكتروني والبوليمرات، كما يلعب دورًا حيويًّا كوسط تفاعل ومذيب في تصنيع المواد الكيميائية الوسيطة المستخدمة في الصناعات الدوائية والمبيدات الزراعية. كما يدخل في تركيب مواد التغليف المتقدمة وأغشية الفصل، وبسبب استقراره الحراري والكيميائي العالي، فهو مكوِّن أساسي في صناعة البطاريات الليثيوم-أيون وأنظمة الترشيح الصناعية.

1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinone is also known as NMP, 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-methylpyrrolidone, and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone. NMP is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a slight ammonia odor. NMP is completely miscible with water. It is highly soluble in lower alcohols, lower ketones, ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and benzene and moderately soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. NMP is strongly hygroscopic, chemically stable, not corrosive towards carbon steel and aluminum, and slightly corrosive to copper. It has low adhesiveness, strong chemical and thermal stability, high polarity, and low volatility. This product is slightly toxic, and its permitted concentration limit in air is 100ppm.
