2. China’s Market Size:
- In 2025, China’s 2-ethylhexanol market size reached RMB 18.062 billion, demonstrating robust growth momentum.

3. Capacity and Production:
- As of the end of 2025, China’s total 2-ethylhexanol production capacity has increased to 5.2 million tons per year, with output expected to exceed 4.5 million tons. Capacity utilization is projected to remain at approximately 86%.

4. Import/Export Status:
- In 2023, China imported 98,000 tons and exported 53,000 tons of 2-ethylhexanol. By 2025, imports are expected to decline to below 70,000 tons, while exports are anticipated to surpass 80,000 tons—reflecting enhanced domestic supply capability and growing international competitiveness.

II. Market Dynamics

1. Price Trend:
- In 2023, the market price of 2-ethylhexanol experienced fluctuations due to volatility in propylene prices—the primary raw material. With technological advancements and capacity expansion, prices are expected to stabilize over the medium to long term; however, the impact of raw material price fluctuations on production costs warrants close monitoring.

2. Supply-Demand Relationship:
- In recent years, the supply-demand balance in China’s 2-ethylhexanol market has been generally stable, although periodic overcapacity pressures have emerged. As downstream application areas continue to expand—especially the rising demand for eco-friendly plasticizers—the supply-demand relationship is expected to tighten further.

3. Competitive Landscape:
- The global 2-ethylhexanol market is highly competitive, with key players including OQ Chemicals, LG Chem, SABIC, and BASF. In the Chinese market, enterprises such as Wanhua Chemical, Yida Chemical, and Longsheng Chemical have progressively strengthened their competitiveness through technological upgrading and capacity expansion.

4. Policy Impact:
- China’s “carbon neutrality” policy exerts profound influence on the 2-ethylhexanol industry, driving enterprises to accelerate adoption of clean production processes and energy-saving & emission-reduction technologies. Concurrently, increasing government support for eco-friendly plasticizers provides a new growth driver for the 2-ethylhexanol market.

III. Analysis and Assessment

1. Sustained Growth in Market Demand:
- Driven by continued expansion across downstream applications—including plasticizers, coatings, solvents, and lubricant additives—and accelerated substitution of traditional phthalate-based plasticizers by eco-friendly alternatives, demand for 2-ethylhexanol is expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

2. Capacity Expansion and Structural Optimization:
- To meet rising demand, domestic producers are actively expanding capacity and upgrading technology. Going forward, industrial capacity structure is expected to further optimize, with the share of high-end products gradually increasing.

3. Raw Material Price Volatility Risk:
- Propylene—the primary raw material for 2-ethylhexanol—exhibits significant price volatility, directly impacting production costs. Enterprises must closely monitor propylene market pricing trends and adopt effective risk-mitigation strategies.

4. Challenges Posed by Stricter Environmental Regulations:
- Increasingly stringent environmental policies require enterprises to significantly increase investment in environmental protection and process upgrades to comply with regulatory requirements—imposing upward pressure on production costs and potentially affecting profitability.

IV. Forecast

1. Market Size Forecast:
- China’s 2-ethylhexanol market size is expected to maintain rapid growth, exceeding RMB 27 billion by 2030.

2. Capacity and Output Forecast:
- With the progressive commissioning of new production facilities and continuous advancement of technological upgrades, China’s 2-ethylhexanol capacity and output are projected to sustain growth.

3. Price Trend Forecast:
- Under conditions of generally balanced supply-demand and relatively stable raw material prices, the market price of 2-ethylhexanol is expected to stabilize. However, potential impacts from raw material price fluctuations and policy changes must be closely watched.

4. Competitive Landscape Forecast:
- Competition is expected to intensify further, with enterprises possessing technological and scale advantages capturing larger market shares. Meanwhile, as Chinese enterprises expand into international markets and global trade environments improve, their competitiveness in overseas markets will steadily strengthen.

About 2-Ethylhexanol

2-Ethylhexanol is a colorless to pale yellow, slightly viscous liquid with a mild, characteristic odor and moderate volatility; it has a boiling point of approximately 184 °C and a melting point near −70 °C. It is a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol classified as an organic chemical intermediate. Primarily used in the production of plasticizers—especially di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and related non-phthalate alternatives—it serves as a key precursor in polymer additive manufacturing. Its derivatives are widely employed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) applications, coatings, adhesives, and sealants. It also functions as a solvent and coalescing agent in industrial coatings and in the synthesis of surfactants and lubricant additives.

2-Ethylhexanol is the most important C8 alcohol and is usedmainly in manufacturing plasticizers. Other minor usesinclude the manufacturing of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, as adispersing agent and wetting agent, as a solvent for gumsand resins, as a cosolvent for nitrocellulose, and in ceramics, paper coatings, rubber latex, textiles, and fragrances.
