Methyl isobutyl ketone

4-Methyl-2-pentanone (CAS 108-10-1) is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a mild, acetone-like odor. It is an aliphatic ketone, characterized by a boiling point of approximately 117–119 °C and a melting point near −86 °C. Primarily employed as a specialty solvent, it is valued for its moderate evaporation rate, good solvency for cellulose esters, resins, and nitrocellulose, and low water miscibility. Its main industrial applications are in coatings—including automotive refinishes, industrial maintenance paints, and coil coatings—as well as in adhesives and printing inks. It also serves as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

MIBK is used as a solvent for gums, resins,nitrocellulose and cellulose ethers, and various fats, oils, and waxes.
4-Methyl-2-pentanone has a fruity, ethereal, spicy (on dilution) odor.
