Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) is a colorless to pale yellow, oily liquid with a faint, characteristic odor and low volatility. It is an aromatic ester, specifically the diester of phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. Primarily employed as a plasticizer, DOP is widely used to impart flexibility, durability, and workability to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other thermoplastic polymers. Its principal applications are in flexible PVC products—including wire and cable insulation, flooring, automotive interiors, medical tubing, and synthetic leather—as well as in adhesives, sealants, and some coating formulations.

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate is a colorless liquid with a slight odor. It is miscible with mineral oil and hexane, and soluble in most organic solvents. Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate is insoluble in water (NTP, 1994a).
