Ammonium iodide is a white to off-white crystalline solid at room temperature, odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 551 °C and decomposition before boiling. It is an inorganic ionic compound, classified as a quaternary ammonium salt and a source of iodide ions. Primarily used as a precursor and catalyst in organic synthesis, it serves as an iodinating agent and reagent in the preparation of alkyl iodides and other iodinated intermediates. Its main applications are in pharmaceutical synthesis—particularly for iodinated active pharmaceutical ingredients—and in specialty chemical manufacturing, including contrast agents and certain photochemical materials.
It is used in photographic chemicals and some medications. It is a catalyst for dethioacetalization reaction.
