China, Germany, and the United States are the leading exporters of Propanal (CAS 123-38-6), collectively accounting for over 60% of global export value in 2023–2024, while India, South Korea, and Brazil represent the largest importers. Propanal prices have remained relatively stable amid moderate demand growth from chemical intermediates and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors. Export volumes from China increased by approximately 7% year-on-year in 2024, while EU-based exports declined slightly, reflecting shifting regional supply chain priorities.
Propanal is a clear, volatile, colorless liquid with a pungent, chloroform-like odor. It is an aliphatic aldehyde (C₃H₆O) that boils at 48–49 °C and freezes at −81 °C. As a reactive carbonyl compound, it serves primarily as a chemical intermediate in organic synthesis. Its principal industrial applications include the production of propionaldehyde-derived oximes, hydrazones, and aldol condensation products—key precursors for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and specialty polymers. It is also used in the synthesis of trimethylolethane and other multifunctional alcohols employed in coatings and plasticizers.
Manufacture of propionic acid, polyvinyl, andother plastics; synthesis of rubber chemicals; disin-fectant; preservative.
Propionaldehyde has a characteristic sharp and pungent odor similar to acetaldehyde. It undergoes reactions typical for the low molecular weight aldehydes, which, because of the terminal carbonyl group, are very reactive. Contamination or the exposure to elevated temperatures may induce a hazardous polymerization.
