China and the United States are the leading exporters of sulfolane (CAS 126-33-0), accounting for the largest shares of global export value in recent years, while Germany, South Korea, and India are among the top importers. Sulfolane prices have remained relatively stable amid steady demand from petrochemical refining and lithium-ion battery electrolyte applications. Export volumes from China have increased modestly since 2022, while U.S. exports have held steady, and European imports—particularly by Germany—have grown consistently, reflecting sustained industrial uptake.
Sulfolane Recent Commodity Market Dynamics Intelligence
I. Price Trends
1. Domestic Market: Over the past week, the average price of sulfolane in the mainstream domestic market has shown minor fluctuations. In the East China region, quotes range from 12,500 to 13,000 RMB/ton, representing an increase of approximately 200 RMB/ton (1.6%) compared to the same period last week. In the South China region, prices range from 12,800 to 13,200 RMB/ton, an increase of 150 RMB/ton (1.2%) compared to last week.
2. International Market: In Asia, the FOB Korea price ranges from 1,750 to 1,800 USD/ton, an increase of 30 USD/ton (1.7%) compared to last week. In Europe, the FOB Rotterdam price ranges from 1,900 to 1,950 USD/ton, an increase of 20 USD/ton (1.1%) compared to last week.
II. Supply Situation
1. Domestic Capacity: The operating rate of major domestic sulfolane producers remains at 75%-80%. Due to equipment maintenance or raw material supply issues, the production volume of some enterprises has slightly decreased, but overall supply remains stable.
2. Import Situation: Recent import volumes have increased, primarily from South Korea and Japan. Imported supplies have supplemented part of the domestic market demand, alleviating supply tightness.
III. Demand Situation
1. Downstream Industries: The primary downstream applications for sulfolane include aromatic extraction and natural gas purification. Recently, the operating rate of the aromatic extraction industry has increased, leading to higher demand for sulfolane, while demand in the natural gas purification sector remains stable.
2. Procurement Situation: Downstream enterprises have shown high procurement enthusiasm. Some companies have advanced stockpiling to ensure production, driving growth in sulfolane market demand.
IV. Cost Factors
1. Raw Material Prices: The main raw materials for sulfolane are butadiene and sulfur dioxide. Recently, the market price of butadiene has risen slightly, providing cost support for sulfolane, while sulfur dioxide prices remain relatively stable.
2. Production Costs: Affected by rising raw material prices, sulfolane production costs have increased. To maintain profit margins, some enterprises have raised product prices.
V. Market Sentiment
1. Trader Sentiment: Traders hold an optimistic outlook for the future, believing that with continued growth in downstream demand and relatively stable supply, sulfolane prices are likely to continue rising. Consequently, they are actively stockpiling.
2. Downstream Enterprise Sentiment: Downstream enterprises express some concern regarding rising sulfolane prices but continue to procure according to production needs. Some enterprises stated they will closely monitor market dynamics and adjust procurement strategies accordingly.
VI. Analysis and Judgment
1. Short-term: In the short term, sulfolane market supply remains relatively stable, downstream demand continues to grow, and cost support is strong. Prices are expected to maintain a slight upward trend.
2. Medium-term: In the medium term, if downstream industries further increase their operating rates, sulfolane demand will rise further. Absent significant changes in supply, prices are likely to continue rising. However, if import volumes increase significantly or raw material prices fall, price gains may be limited.
3. Long-term: In the long term, sulfolane market trends will be influenced by macroeconomic conditions, the development of downstream industries, and environmental policies. If the macroeconomy remains favorable and downstream industries continue to develop, sulfolane demand will grow, supporting higher price levels. Conversely, prices may face downward pressure.
VII. Forecast
1. Price Forecast: It is estimated that over the next week, the average price of sulfolane in the domestic mainstream market will range between 12,800 and 13,300 RMB/ton. In the international market, the FOB Korea price will range between 1,780 and 1,830 USD/ton, and the FOB Rotterdam price will range between 1,920 and 1,970 USD/ton.
2. Supply and Demand Forecast: Over the coming period, sulfolane market supply will remain stable, while downstream demand will continue to grow, leading to a tighter overall market supply-demand balance.
3. Risk Warning: Attention should be paid to the impact of raw material price fluctuations, changes in import volumes, and adjustments in downstream operating rates on the sulfolane market. Production and procurement strategies should be adjusted promptly to mitigate market risks.
Sulfolane (CAS 126-33-0) is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid at room temperature with a high boiling point (285 °C) and low volatility. It is a cyclic sulfone—a polar aprotic organic chemical—characterized by exceptional thermal stability and miscibility with water and many organic solvents. Primarily employed as a selective solvent in industrial extraction processes, sulfolane is widely used for the purification of aromatic hydrocarbons from petroleum reformates and for the removal of acid gases (e.g., H₂S and CO₂) from natural gas and refinery streams. It also serves as a reaction medium and catalyst stabilizer in specialty chemical synthesis, particularly in polymerization and alkylation processes supporting the production of high-performance polymers and fine chemicals.
Sulfolane is widely used as an industrial solvent, especially in the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon mixtures and to purify natural gas.The first large scale commercial use of sulfolane, the sulfinol process, was first implemented by Shell Oil Company in March 1964 at the Person gas plant near Karnes City, Texas. The sulfinol process purifies natural gas by removing H2S, CO2, COS and mercaptans from natural gas with a mixture of alkanolamine and sulfolane.
