It is an inorganic compound classified as an alkali metal silicate, typically existing as a mixture of potassium oxide (K₂O) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂) with variable K₂O:SiO₂ molar ratios. It serves primarily as a binder, stabilizer, and source of soluble silica in industrial formulations. Key applications include mineral-based coatings, fireproofing agents, foundry molds, cement additives, and as a precursor for silica gels, zeolites, and other silicon-containing materials. It is widely used in construction chemicals, agriculture (as a foliar nutrient and fungistatic agent), and specialty ceramics.
