Lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃) is a white to off-white, odorless, crystalline solid that is non-volatile and thermally stable, with a high melting point of approximately 2,315 °C. It is an inorganic rare-earth metal oxide and a basic oxide that readily reacts with moisture and CO₂ in air to form hydroxides and carbonates. Industrially, it serves as a key precursor for the production of lanthanum-based catalysts, specialty glasses, and ceramic materials. Its primary applications include use in automotive catalytic converters, phosphors for lighting and displays, high-refractive-index optical glasses, and as a dopant or stabilizer in solid oxide fuel cell electrolytes and piezoelectric ceramics.
