Germany, China, and the United States are the leading exporters of sodium ferrocyanide, collectively accounting for over 60% of global exports in 2023–2024, while India, Brazil, and Turkey represent the largest importers by volume and value. Imports into India and Brazil have risen steadily since 2022, coinciding with moderate upward pressure on sodium ferrocyanide prices amid tightening supply from key European producers.
Sodium ferrocyanide is a yellow crystalline solid, typically encountered as the decahydrate (Na₄[Fe(CN)₆]·10H₂O), with no characteristic odor and low volatility. It is an inorganic coordination compound, classified as a ferrocyanide salt and a transition metal cyanocomplex. Industrially, it serves primarily as a precursor in the production of ferric ferrocyanide (Prussian blue), a pigment used in inks, paints, and artist’s colors, and as an anticaking agent in table salt and road salt. It is also employed in metallurgical applications for surface treatment and in analytical chemistry for iron detection and quantitative analysis.

Sodium ferrocyanide is the sodium salt of the coordination compound of formula [Fe(CN)6]4−. In its hydrous form, Na4Fe(CN)6 • 10H2O (sodium ferrocyanide decahydrate), it is sometimes known as yellow prussiate of soda. It is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. The yellow color is the color of ferrocyanide anion. Despite the presence of the cyanide ligands, sodium ferrocyanide has low toxicity (acceptable daily intake 0–0.025 mg/kg body weight). The ferrocyanides are less toxic than many salts of cyanide, because they tend not to release free cyanide. However, like all ferrocyanide salt solutions, addition of an acid can result in the production of hydrogen cyanide gas, which is toxic.
