1,4-Butane Sultone

1,4-Butane sultone is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid at room temperature, with a mild, chloroform-like odor and moderate volatility; it melts at approximately 27–29 °C and boils at 120–125 °C under reduced pressure (20 mmHg). It is a cyclic organic sulfonic acid ester—specifically, a four-membered sultone—and functions primarily as a reactive alkylating agent and chemical intermediate. Its principal industrial use is in the synthesis of sulfobetaines, zwitterionic surfactants, and sulfonated polymers, as well as in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional dyes. It is widely employed in coatings, oilfield chemicals, and personal care formulations for introducing sulfonate functionality into molecules.

1,4-Butane Sultone is an alkylating agent with weak carcinogenic activity.
Butanesultone is a viscous, clear, colourless – or yellowish/brown – and odourless liquid. When heated, vapours of butanesultone are known to form explosive mixtures with air and are reported to cause explosion hazards.
