Strontium hydroxide is a white, crystalline solid that exists commonly as the octahydrate (Sr(OH)₂·8H₂O); it is odorless, non-volatile, and decomposes before boiling, with the anhydrous form melting at approximately 375 °C. It is an inorganic alkaline earth metal hydroxide and a strong base. Industrially, it serves primarily as a precursor in the production of other strontium compounds—including strontium carbonate, strontium nitrate, and strontium aluminate—and as a stabilizer in polyethylene plastics. Its applications span electronics (e.g., cathode ray tube glass), refining (sugar decolorization), and specialty ceramics, where it functions as a flux or dopant.
Strontium hydroxide is used in extracting sugar from beet sugar molasses and in making lubricant soaps and greases.
