Aluminum hydroxide is a white, odorless, crystalline or amorphous solid that is non-volatile and thermally stable up to approximately 300 °C, at which point it begins to dehydrate to alumina. It is an inorganic compound classified as a metal hydroxide and amphoteric base. Industrially, it serves primarily as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant in polymers, cables, and construction materials, and as a precursor in the production of activated alumina, aluminum sulfate, and other aluminum-based chemicals. It is widely used in pharmaceuticals (as an antacid and phosphate binder), in water treatment for coagulation and clarification, and as a filler or additive in paper, ceramics, and catalyst supports.
