Sulfur hexafluoride Market share- How big is the Sulfur hexafluoride market?

China and the United States are the leading exporters of sulfur hexafluoride, accounting for a substantial share of global supply, while the European Union—particularly Germany and France—and South Korea represent the largest importing markets. Sulfur hexafluoride prices have remained relatively stable amid consistent demand from electrical insulation and semiconductor manufacturing sectors. Export volumes from China increased modestly in 2023–2024, while EU imports declined slightly, reflecting ongoing regulatory scrutiny and gradual adoption of SF₆ alternatives in high-voltage equipment.

About Sulfur hexafluoride

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, non-flammable gas at ambient conditions, with a boiling point of −64 °C and a melting point of −50.8 °C. It is an inorganic compound classified as a halogenated noble gas analog and is chemically inert under most industrial conditions. SF₆ is primarily used as an electrical insulating and arc-quenching medium in high-voltage circuit breakers, switchgear, and gas-insulated substations. It also serves in magnesium casting as a protective cover gas to prevent oxidation and in semiconductor manufacturing for plasma etching and chamber cleaning. Its applications are concentrated in the power transmission and electronics industries.

In electrical circuit interrupters, in electronic ultra-high frequency piping.

Sulfur hexafluoride is a colorless, odorless, nontoxic, nonflammable gas that has a high dielectric strength and serves widely as an insulating gas in electrical equipment. At atmospheric pressures it sublimes directly from the solid to the gas phase and does not have a stable liquid phase unless under a pressure of more than 32 psia (221 kPa, abs). It is shipped as a liquefied compressed gas at its vapor pressure of 298 psig at 70°F (2050 kPa at 21.1 0C).One of the most chemically inert gases known, it is completely stable in the presence of most materials to temperatures of about 400°F (204°C) and has shown no breakdown or reaction in quartz at 900°F (482°C). Sulfur hexafluoride is slightly soluble in water and oil. No change in pH occurs when distilled water is saturated with sulfur hexafluoride.
