(-)-Securinine

(-)-Securinine is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a bitter taste and no prominent odor; it has a melting point of approximately 159–161 °C and is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in common organic solvents. It is a naturally occurring alkaloid and chiral organic compound, classified as a tetracyclic securinega alkaloid. Primarily used as a chiral building block and pharmacological reference standard, (-)-securinine serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of bioactive molecules for neurological and oncological research. Its principal application areas are pharmaceutical R&D and academic medicinal chemistry, where it is employed in structure–activity relationship studies and as a template for novel central nervous system agents.

Extracted from leaves and roots of Securinega suffruticosa Rehder. The most widely studied of these alkaloids, Securinine, is a specific GABA receptor antagonist and has been found to have significant in vivo CNS activity.
