3-Methyl-1-butene is a colorless, volatile liquid with a mild, gasoline-like odor. It is an aliphatic olefin (unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon) and one of the isomers of pentene. With a boiling point of approximately 20 °C and a melting point of −135 °C, it is typically handled as a low-boiling, highly reactive monomer. It serves primarily as a chemical intermediate in the production of synthetic rubber, specialty polymers, and high-octane fuel components. Its main applications are in polymer modification—particularly in the synthesis of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymers (EPDM) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)—and as a comonomer to control branching and density in polyolefin manufacturing.
