Sodium nitrite is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline solid, odorless and highly soluble in water; it melts at approximately 271 °C and decomposes before boiling. It is an inorganic salt and a key nitrogen-containing compound widely employed as a chemical intermediate. Its principal industrial uses include diazotization reactions in the synthesis of dyes, pigments, and pharmaceuticals, as well as corrosion inhibition in heat-transfer fluids and metal-treating solutions. It is also utilized in the production of rubber chemicals, agrochemical intermediates, and food preservatives (in regulated applications).
