Sodium chloride

Sodium chloride is a white, crystalline solid at room temperature, odorless, non-volatile, and highly soluble in water; it melts at 801 °C and boils at 1413 °C. It is an inorganic ionic compound, classified as a salt formed from the neutralization of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Sodium chloride serves as a key raw material in the chlor-alkali industry for the production of chlorine, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), and hydrogen—critical intermediates for vinyl chloride monomer, ethylene dichloride, and numerous other chemicals. Its applications span water treatment, food preservation, de-icing, and as a process aid or pH adjuster in pharmaceutical manufacturing, agrochemical formulation, and dye synthesis.
