Thionyl chloride Market share- How big is the Thionyl chloride market?

China and the United States are the leading exporters of thionyl chloride, accounting for the largest shares of global supply, while India, South Korea, and Germany represent the top importing countries. Thionyl chloride prices have remained relatively stable amid steady cross-border flows, with minor regional fluctuations tied to pharmaceutical and battery material demand. Imports by India and South Korea have grown steadily since 2022, reflecting expanding domestic production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and lithium-based batteries.

Thionyl chloride Market Analysis

Recent Market Dynamics of Thionyl Chloride

I. Market Price Dynamics
1. Domestic Market
- East China region mainstream quotation: 6,800-7,200 RMB/ton (ex-works, tax included), up approximately 3% from last week.
- North China region mainstream quotation: 6,700-7,000 RMB/ton, with stable prices, though high-end quotes are tentatively adjusted upward.
- Prices in the South China region are generally higher than in other regions due to increased logistics costs, ranging from 7,000 to 7,400 RMB/ton.

2. International Market
- Southeast Asia CFR quotation: 1,050-1,100 USD/ton, up 5% month-on-month, impacted by reduced Chinese exports.
- Due to the onset of the peak demand season, import prices in the Indian market have climbed to 1,120-1,150 USD/ton.

II. Supply and Demand Dynamics
1. Supply Side
- Operating rates of major domestic producers (such as Kaisheng New Materials and Shilong Industrial) remain above 80%. However, some enterprises have temporarily reduced production due to environmental inspections, leading to regional supply tightness.
- Import volumes decreased by 15% month-on-month, primarily because overseas suppliers prioritized European and American orders, contracting supply to the Asian market.

2. Demand Side
- Demand from the downstream lithium salt industry remains robust, with the expansion of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) capacity driving a 20% year-on-year increase in thionyl chloride consumption.
- Pesticide intermediates (such as sodium trichloropyridinol) have entered their production peak season, increasing demand for thionyl chloride by 10%-15%.
- Demand in the pharmaceutical intermediate sector remains stable, but limited new orders provide weak support for prices.

III. Costs and Profits
1. Raw Material Costs
- Sulfur prices continue to rise, with a domestic average price of 1,250 RMB/ton (month-on-month increase of 8%). Liquid chlorine prices fluctuate significantly (East China region: -50 to +100 RMB/ton), pushing up the production cost of thionyl chloride.
- Cost pressure on the chlorosulfonic acid process is significant, prompting some enterprises to switch to purchasing low-cost chlorine gas to reduce expenses.

2. Industry Profits
- Gross margins for mainstream enterprises remain at 15%-20%. However, profit margins for small and medium-sized enterprises have been compressed to below 10% due to high raw material procurement costs.

IV. Relevant Policies and Events
1. Environmental Policies
- Shandong, Jiangsu, and other regions have launched special rectifications of chemical industrial parks, causing some thionyl chloride enterprises to halt production for maintenance, affecting short-term supply.
2. Trade Dynamics
- The final ruling on India's anti-dumping investigation into Chinese thionyl chloride remains pending, but the market has already partially digested the negative expectations.

V. Analysis and Judgment
1. Short-term Driving Factors
- Supply Side: Environmental restrictions have led to regional shortages of goods, compounded by reduced imports, supporting price increases.
- Demand Side: The high prosperity of the lithium salt industry continues, and the seasonal recovery of pesticide intermediate demand creates a dual pull.
- Cost Side: Sulfur prices remain high, and the cost transmission effect is becoming apparent.

2. Price Trends
- Short-term (1-2 weeks): Prices are expected to continue a slight upward trend, with the East China region potentially breaking through 7,300 RMB/ton.
- Medium-term (1-3 months): Attention should be paid to the progress of India's anti-dumping investigation and the pace of new capacity deployment in the lithium salt industry. If supply recovers, prices may correct to the 6,800-7,000 RMB/ton range.

VI. Forecasts and Recommendations
1. Price Forecast
- The average price for Q4 2023 is expected to be 7,000-7,500 RMB/ton (domestic), with international CFR prices stabilizing between 1,050-1,150 USD/ton.
2. Risk Warnings
- Unforeseen tightening of environmental policies may lead to further contraction of supply.
- The risk of overcapacity in the lithium salt industry may transmit to the upstream raw material market.
3. Operational Recommendations
- Downstream enterprises should appropriately increase safety stock to mitigate the risk of short-term price fluctuations.
- Traders need to closely monitor the dynamics of India's anti-dumping investigation and plan ahead for the Southeast Asian market.

About Thionyl chloride

Thionyl chloride is a colorless to pale yellow, fuming liquid with a pungent, suffocating odor and high volatility; it has a boiling point of 76 °C and a melting point of −105 °C. It is an inorganic chlorinating agent and acid chloride derivative, widely employed as a reactive intermediate in organic synthesis. Its primary industrial use is for the conversion of carboxylic acids and alcohols to acyl chlorides and alkyl chlorides, respectively—key steps in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, agrochemicals, and specialty chemicals. It is extensively applied in the synthesis of herbicides, insecticides, and drug candidates, particularly in processes requiring mild, non-oxidizing chlorination conditions.

For making acyl chlorides, to replace hydroxide of sulfhydryl groups with chlorine atoms.
It is colorless or light yellow volatile liquid with a strong suffocating odor. It can also be miscible with benzene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.

This chemical is included in Fine Chemicals - Pharmaceutical Intermediates & APIs. See more about what is Thionyl chloride and Thionyl chloride SDS information.
