Zinc sulfate is a white, crystalline, non-volatile solid that is odorless and highly soluble in water; the heptahydrate form (most common) melts at approximately 100 °C with decomposition. It is an inorganic salt composed of zinc cations and sulfate anions. Zinc sulfate serves primarily as a source of bioavailable zinc in fertilizers, animal feed supplements, and dietary fortification products, and is used industrially in electrolytic zinc refining, viscose rayon production, and as a mordant in textile dyeing. Its principal application areas include agriculture (micronutrient fertilizer), animal nutrition, pharmaceuticals (zinc supplementation), and electroplating baths.
Zinc sulfate occurs in nature as the mineral, zinkosite. The heptahydrate, ZnSO4•7H2O is the mineral, goslarite. The salt is used as a mordant in calico-printing, in making rayon, in preserving wood, in animal feeds, in electroplating, and in preparing many zinc compounds.
