Sodium dithionite is a white to grayish-white crystalline powder, often with a faint sulfur odor; it is non-volatile, decomposes before melting (typically above 50 °C in aqueous solution or upon heating in air), and is highly water-soluble. It is an inorganic reducing agent and salt of dithionous acid. Primarily used for its strong reductive capacity, it serves as a key bleaching agent in the textile and paper industries and as a reducing intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, pigments, and organic compounds. Its applications are concentrated in dye manufacturing, vat dyeing processes, and selective reduction steps in fine chemical production.
