Antimony trifluoride is a white, crystalline solid at room temperature, odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 290 °C and decomposition before boiling. It is an inorganic metal fluoride and a Lewis acidic compound. Primarily used as a catalyst and fluorinating agent, it serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of other antimony-containing compounds and fluorinated organic molecules. Its main industrial applications include fluorination reactions in the production of refrigerants, pharmaceuticals, and specialty agrochemicals. It is also employed in the manufacture of flame retardants and certain optical glasses.
To catalyze fluorinations by HF, manufacture of chlorofluorides, in dyeing, usually in form of double salts, e.g., antimony sodium fluoride or antimony fluoride and ammonium sulfate double salt, manufacture of pottery and porcelains.
