Iodine chloride (ICl) is a reddish-brown, crystalline solid at room temperature with a pungent, chlorine-like odor; it melts at 27 °C and boils at 97 °C, exhibiting appreciable volatility and sensitivity to moisture. It is an interhalogen compound—specifically, a reactive halogenating agent formed from iodine and chlorine. Industrially, iodine chloride serves primarily as a chlorinating and iodinating reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of iodinated aromatic compounds and specialty halogenated intermediates. Its principal applications are in pharmaceutical manufacturing (e.g., radiopharmaceutical precursors), agrochemical synthesis (e.g., iodinated fungicides and plant growth regulators), and the production of dyes and analytical reagents.
Iodine monochloride is used to estimate theiodine values of fats and oils and as a topicalanti-infective (Merck 1996).
