ヘキサメチルジシロキサン（HMDSO）は、無色透明で揮発性の液体であり、クロロホルムに似た穏やかな臭気がする。これは有機ケイ素化合物、特に対称型ジシロキサンであり、低表面張力、高い熱安定性、低い沸点（100–102 ℃）および無視できる程度の水溶性を示す。ヘキサメチルジシロキサンは主にシリコーンの合成における化学中間体として用いられ、シラノール末端ポリジメチルシロキサンや架橋系において使用される機能性シランの製造に利用される。その主要な応用分野は、シリコーンポリマーの生産、表面改質剤、および分析化学・半導体製造におけるシリル化試薬である。
