ピロ亜硫酸ナトリウムは、わずかに二酸化硫黄の臭気を有する白色の結晶性粉末であり、非揮発性で、通常150 ℃以上で融解前に分解する。また、水への溶解度が極めて高い。これは無機亜硫酸塩であり、還元剤および硫黄含有化合物として分類される。産業的には主に保存料、抗酸化剤、漂白剤として使用され、化学合成における二酸化硫黄供給源としても機能する。主な応用分野には、食品・飲料の保存、ワイン醸造、水処理、繊維の染色および印刷、写真現像液における還元剤、ならびに重合プロセスにおける還元剤が含まれる。
