リグノスルホン酸ナトリウムは、黄褐色から茶褐色の水溶性無定形粉末または顆粒状固体であり、特有の臭気はなく、揮発性も低い。高温では融解するのではなく分解する。これは、木材の天然成分であるリグニンをスルホン化したアニオン性高分子芳香族化合物であり、主に分散剤、接着剤、乳化剤として用いられる機能性添加剤である。コンクリート用混和材、農薬製剤（例：水和性粉剤および懸濁濃縮剤）、染料調合などに使用される。典型的な応用分野には、建設化学品、作物保護製品、セラミックス、皮革なめし工程が含まれる。

In this case, the inorganic mud and inorganic salt impurities remain in the suspension state in the drilling, preventing the mud flocculation.
