ポリアクリル酸ナトリウムは、白色から薄黄色の無臭で自由流動性のある顆粒状または粉末状の固体であり、非常に吸湿性が高く、水に容易に溶解します。これは、アクリル酸の重合体であるポリアクリル酸を水酸化ナトリウムで中和して得られる合成水溶性ポリ電解質高分子です。主に超高吸水性ポリマー（SAP）として使用され、化学中間体としては用いられず、急速かつ大量の水膨潤を必要とする最終用途アプリケーションにおいて直接機能します。その主な用途は、衛生用品（例：おむつ、大人用失禁パッド）、農業分野における保水剤、および産業分野における止水材です。また、洗剤では洗浄助剤および懸濁安定剤として、また一部の特殊塗料や接着剤ではレオロジー改質剤として利用されています。
