Resorcinol

Resorcinol (CAS 108-46-3) is a white to pale pink crystalline solid at room temperature, with a faint, characteristic odor and moderate volatility; it melts at approximately 110 °C and boils at 277 °C. It is an aromatic dihydroxybenzene (1,3-dihydroxybenzene) and classified as a versatile organic chemical intermediate. Industrially, resorcinol is primarily used in the synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and UV absorbers, and serves as a key monomer in the production of resorcinol-formaldehyde resins—widely employed in tire cord adhesion systems and specialty adhesives. Its applications span polymer manufacturing, coatings, and agrochemical intermediates, particularly in formulations requiring strong bonding or enhanced stability under stress or UV exposure.

It is white needle-like crystal. It will become pink upon exposure to light and air or contact with iron. It has a sweet taste. It is soluble in water, ethanol, amyl alcohol, easily soluble in ether, glycerol, slightly soluble in chloroform, carbon disulfide as well as in benzene.
