Trichloroethylene Market share- How big is the Trichloroethylene market?

Germany, the United States, and China are the leading exporters of Trichloroethylene (CAS 79-01-6), collectively accounting for over 45% of global exports in 2023–2024, while India, South Korea, and Mexico represent the largest importers by value. Imports into Southeast Asia and Latin America have risen steadily since 2022, coinciding with moderate upward pressure on Trichloroethylene prices amid tightening environmental regulations in major producing regions.

(B) Supply-Demand Situation
1. Supply Side: In 2024, China’s trichloroethylene production capacity totaled 390,000 metric tons, unchanged year-on-year; output amounted to 233,800 metric tons, down 1.18% YoY; industry-wide operating rate was 59.95%, indicating ample capacity supply. Future capacity is expected to remain stable, influenced by the quota-based production system for the third-generation refrigerant R134a—which commenced in 2024 and relies on trichloroethylene as a key raw material.
2. Demand Side: Primary applications of trichloroethylene include chemical synthesis, metal cleaning, and use as a solvent. Its most significant domestic downstream application is as a chemical intermediate for producing the third-generation refrigerant R134a. In 2024, China’s apparent consumption of trichloroethylene reached 207,400 metric tons, down 3.62% YoY; overall supply-demand balance remained relatively stable.

II. Analysis and Judgment
(A) Causes of Price Disparities
1. Brand and Quality: Variations in purity, impurity content, and other quality attributes among different brands result in corresponding price differences. For instance, Suzhou Senfeida Chemical Co., Ltd.’s domestic product (99.99% purity) was quoted at RMB 9,500/ton—significantly higher than prices for certain competing brands.
2. Regional Differences: Localized supply-demand conditions and transportation costs contribute to regional price variations. Higher quotations observed in Jiangsu and Shanghai may reflect localized demand strength, freight expenses, and seller-specific pricing strategies.
3. Supply-Demand Impact: The current pronounced oversupply scenario has led inventory-holding traders to adopt discount-driven sales strategies, thereby suppressing overall price levels. For example, the East China market price remained stable at RMB 4,900/ton with no weekly fluctuation, underscoring abundant supply and relatively weak demand.

(B) Industry Development Trend Impacts
1. Policy Orientation: The “14th Five-Year Plan” and related policy frameworks encourage chemical enterprises to transition toward green, circular, fine, and efficient development models, raising expectations for R&D capabilities. The trichloroethylene industry faces mounting pressure to pursue automation, cleaner production, and sustainable development—requiring increased investment in environmental protection, safety management, inspection systems, and production technology upgrades, potentially influencing production costs and final product pricing.
2. Downstream Industry Impact: The implementation of quota-based production for the downstream third-generation refrigerant R134a directly affects trichloroethylene demand. Given that R134a manufacturing constitutes trichloroethylene’s primary domestic end-use, policy shifts and demand fluctuations within the downstream sector inevitably influence trichloroethylene’s supply-demand dynamics and price trajectory.

III. Forecast
(A) Short-Term Outlook (1–2 months)
1. Price Trend: Trichloroethylene prices are expected to remain range-bound at relatively low levels over the near term. The prevailing oversupply condition is unlikely to reverse quickly, and inventory-holding traders will likely sustain price-cutting measures to accelerate sales—leaving little upward momentum for prices.
2. Supply-Demand Balance: On the supply side, stable capacity and steady output suggest continued market abundance. On the demand side, downstream demand remains broadly stable but is unlikely to surge significantly in the short term; overall demand is projected to remain flat.

(B) Long-Term Outlook (6 months–1 year)
1. Price Trend: Over the longer term, trichloroethylene prices will likely be shaped by multiple interrelated factors. Should downstream demand expand or industry capacity contract due to regulatory adjustments or tightening environmental standards, prices could rebound. Conversely, if supply-demand imbalances intensify, prices may persist at depressed levels.
2. Industry Development Trends: Advancing technological innovation and increasingly stringent environmental requirements will accelerate the trichloroethylene industry’s shift toward greener, more efficient, and sustainable operations. Enterprises will place greater emphasis on technological R&D and product upgrading to enhance quality, functionality, and value-added attributes—aligning with evolving market needs and regulatory mandates. Concurrently, industry consolidation is anticipated to accelerate, with smaller-scale, technologically outdated producers gradually exiting the market, leading to improved market concentration.

About Trichloroethylene

Trichloroethylene is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like odor and low water solubility. It is a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, specifically a tetrachloroethene derivative, with a boiling point of 121 °C and a melting point of −22 °C. Historically employed as a metal degreasing solvent and dry-cleaning agent, it is now primarily used as an intermediate in the production of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants—most notably HFC-134a—and in the synthesis of fluoropolymers and specialty chemicals. Its applications are concentrated in industrial cleaning, refrigerant manufacturing, and as a building block for fluorinated compounds in electronics and automotive sectors.

Trichloroethylene is used as a solvent, in drycleaning, in degreasing, and in limited use asa surgical anesthetic.
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a clear, colorless, nonflammable (at room temperature) stable toxic liquid with chloroform-like odor (ATSDR, 2011). It is slightly soluble in water, is soluble in greases and common organic solvents, and boils at 87°C (190 F).On contact with air, it slowly decomposes and forms phosgene, hydrogen chloride, and dichloroacetyl chloride. Trichloroethylene in contact with water becomes corrosive and forms dichloroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid. It is soluble in methanol, diethyl ether, and acetone.
