Dodecane is a colorless, odorless liquid at room temperature with low volatility, a melting point of −9.6 °C, and a boiling point of 216 °C. It is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (alkane) and a member of the n-alkane series. Dodecane serves primarily as a solvent and reference standard in analytical chemistry, particularly in gas chromatography for retention index calibration. It is also used as a component in specialty fuel formulations and as a raw material or diluent in the production of surfactants, lubricants, and plasticizers. Its applications are concentrated in coatings, polymer processing aids, and research-grade reagents.
