1-Octadecanol

1-Octadecanol is a white, waxy solid at room temperature with a faint, fatty odor and low volatility; it melts at approximately 58–60 °C and boils at 344 °C at atmospheric pressure. It is a saturated, straight-chain primary aliphatic alcohol (C₁₈H₃₈O) and belongs to the class of long-chain fatty alcohols. Industrially, it serves primarily as an intermediate in the production of surfactants—including sulfate and ethoxylated derivatives—and as a precursor to esters used in lubricants, cosmetics, and personal care formulations. Its principal application areas include detergents, emulsifiers, textile auxiliaries, and pharmaceutical excipients, where it functions as a thickener, opacifier, or co-emulsifier.

1-Octadecanol is used to create cosmetic emulsions, and for its antifoaming and lubricating action. 1-Octadecanol is also a viscosity agent and builder. It is a saturated alcohol of high purity and can substitute for cetyl alcohol in pharmaceutical dispensing, in cosmetic creams, for emulsions, textile oils and finishes, as antifoam agent, lubricant, and chemical raw material.
Unctuous, white flakes or granules; faintodor; bland taste. Soluble in alcohol, acetone, andether; insoluble in water. Combustible.
