Dichloroethane (1,2-dichloroethane) is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like odor. It is a saturated aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbon, boiling at 83.5 °C and melting at −35 °C. Primarily used as a chemical intermediate, it serves as the key precursor in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which is polymerized to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It also finds application as a solvent in metal cleaning, adhesives, and coatings, and as a process aid in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.
